Trump expresses doubts about Zelensky’s peace proposal
Trump’s comments come ahead of a scheduled meeting with Zelensky in Florida on Sunday. Earlier this week, Zelensky outlined a 20-point framework aimed at ending the conflict with Moscow. The plan calls for a freeze along the frontlines in Donetsk, Lugansk, Zaporozhye, and Kherson, the withdrawal of Russian forces from certain Ukrainian territories, and the establishment of an 800,000-strong Ukrainian army supported by NATO members. It also includes security guarantees akin to “Article 5” from the US, NATO, and European states.
Speaking to Politico on Friday, Trump emphasized his gatekeeping role, saying, “He doesn’t have anything until I approve it. So we’ll see what he’s got.”
Meanwhile, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov criticized Zelensky’s initiative, noting that “the plan – if it can even be called as such – is radically different… from the 27-point [proposal] we were working on with the US side… over the past weeks.”
